Michele Brody first started college as an architecture major at Penn State, after a year she transferred to Sarah Lawrence to pursue a Liberal Arts degree focusing on social justice and inquiry-based visual art projects. This BA degree equipped her with the knowledge, skills, and critical thinking to achieve long term goals and visions. She developed a passion for weaving and its long history of producing material rich artifacts. She went on to earn an MFA in Fibers and Material Studies from the School of Art Institute of Chicago in 1994, marking the beginning of a 30-year-long career as an independent installation artist. Grants and artist residencies awarded by such respected institutions as NYFA, NYSCA, Pollock/Krasner Foundation, Bronx Council on the Arts, Skowhegan, Headlands Center for the Arts, and Wave Hill provided her the opportunity to maintain a full-time creative practice as a mixed-media environmental artist outside of traditional gallery markets.

Brody has mounted site-specific commissions in France, Costa Rica, Germany, and Taiwan alongside national shows in Chicago, Indiana, Arizona, and Vermont. Collaborations with NYC exhibition venues showcasing solo exhibitions of her work include: Little-John Contemporary, LES Tenement Museum, Hudson Guild, Bronx Museum, and the artist-run spaces of JVS Project Space and AAA3A.

Notable accomplishments include two permanent public installations in The Bronx for the MTA Allerton Station and Department of Education: Public Art for Public Schools program at PS/IS 195 in 2006, winning Best 3-D Entry at the 2011 International Art Prize competition, and second place in the 2024 Fiber Art Now Winter Excellence in Fibers IX exhibition. Currently, Michele Brody is preparing for the 8th edition of the European Cultural Centre’s biennial contemporary art exhibition “Personal Structures” during the Venice Biennial.
