Looking Out

Littlejohn Contemporary, Project Room Installation, New York, NY

7’8” x 8’ x 16’6”

5 sets of large format photographs of mid-town Manhattan printed on back-lit vinyl hung from copper pipe structure, to recreate the view as if the walls were actual windows looking out.  Hanging in front of each print is a double layer of nylon curtains sewn with pockets that match the outline of the cityscape.  Within each pocket is grass seed, watered by a recycling drip irrigation system supplied by stainless steel reservoirs.  The piece is lit from behind by daylight balanced fluorescent bulbs. Over time the grass grows through a full life cycle, from germination to bright green, then drying out and turning brown.  The curtains were replanted during the exhibition, retaining water stains from the previous planting
